Automated bank feeds from Barclays

It's a great day for our users as we launch a pioneering link with Barclays Business and the first stage of our automated bank feeds rollout.

As you already know, FreeAgent has a pretty intuitive system in place for uploading bank statements into your account. However, we’ve often been asked whether there’s any way of circumventing the whole “download and then re-upload into FreeAgent” step for bank statements. A lot of our customers have requested the option to have their bank transactions imported directly into FreeAgent - so we’ve been working away at making this a reality.

And today we’re delighted to announce that our first automated bank feeds feature in FreeAgent is now up and running.

Available to all FreeAgent users who are Barclays Business account holders, the new feature allows you to set up automatic daily feeds of transactions from your Barclays Business account directly into FreeAgent, without the need to mess around with electronic statements.

Getting started is simple. You just hit the Enable Daily Feeds button when viewing your Barclays Business account in FreeAgent and once it’s all set up your transactions will be automatically loaded every day into FreeAgent.

Essentially, by using the daily feeds feature, you’ll get faster and more efficient access to your bank data - allowing you an even better way of staying on top of your bookkeeping. It’s an intuitive upgrade that gives direct, reliable and secure access to your business accounts and we reckon it’s going to be a very popular addition to FreeAgent.

We are the first, and currently only, app to be able to provide this direct link with Barclays Business and we're very excited about the benefit it will bring to our users.

We’ll be rolling this out gradually to users over the next few weeks, so if you can’t see the option yet don’t panic - it’s coming!

Of course, we’ll also be working hard on our wider bank feed strategy to ensure all FreeAgent users have the option of automatically importing bank statements into their accounts. It's taken us much longer than we'd hoped but we're getting close now and we'll be sharing more concrete details about this soon.

Over to you...

Wow, finally, I'm moving my bank account to Barclays then.

Sounds great, but keen to know when other banks will be coming. Not all of us are with barclays you know!

Ha-li-fax.... ha-li-fax... ha-li-fax... ha-li-fax... ha-li-fax... ha-li-fax... ha-li-fax... ha-li-fax...

Wonderful news guys - really pleased to see some genuine trend-setting going on, direct integration with the banks is exactly what accounts software should have been doing all along.

You really have done a great justice here. Thank you.

Excellent! Glad to see it starting... Will be excited when Santander integration comes :)

This is great news, I'm emailing all of my clients now to tell them to change to Barclay's Bank.

Very exciting.

Good news any plans for feeds from Alliance and Lecister/ AKA Santander? When you say Barclays account does it have to be a business account or will a standard current account work?
Andy Thomas, Mon March 26, 2012
Great addition to the app! Looking forward to other banks being added *cough* Natwest *cough* ;)
Phil Ricketts, Mon March 26, 2012
Great! But I'm with Lloyds TSB :(

When?
roan, Mon March 26, 2012
Hi everyone,

If you're not with Barclays Business then you'll have to wait a bit longer I'm afraid, but we are working on this as part of our wider bank feeds work, which has been ongoing for a while.

We'll share more news about this soon.

<cough>HSBC</cough>
Daniel Mason, Mon March 26, 2012
I'll second the HSBC one :)

This is a feature that will make a big difference!
stulast, Mon March 26, 2012
Woohoo! Switching it on now! This is brilliant news!
Richard Butler, Mon March 26, 2012
I'm with Barclays Business, but not getting a daily feed link.
Alister macleod, Mon March 26, 2012
Great - I'm with Barclays & absolutely delighted to hear this :)
roan, Mon March 26, 2012
@Richard: We're rolling this out over the next week or two, so you might not see the link straight away.

Shouldn't be long though!

Great news that it is moving. For all those that suggested moving clients to Barclays please talk to Barclays users first you might not be so quick to jump ship. I don't have a client using them that would do it again.
Undercover Accountant, Wed March 28, 2012
I second the Barclays Business comments from my clients and personal experience.

Whilst this is an admirable step forward - I think it may be a little misleading as Xero has provided this functionality (as well as live feeds for every UK bank account HSBC, Lloyds etc.) for at least a year probably closer to 2.
Lynne Cowan, Wed March 28, 2012
Fantastic news - particularly as HSBC is decidedly clunky to navigate - this will be a huge timesaver
Andrew McSweeney, Fri March 30, 2012
Good news for Barclays customers but us Natwest customers would like to see live feeds too! Actually quite jealous that we can't use the feature yet. Any idea on whether you are looking to direct links with banks or whether we would have to use third parties (i.e. Yodle which sounds a bit dodgy to me!)?
Kat, Wed April 04, 2012
Is there a date by which all Barclays Business bank account users should have this feature enabled? I've got a barclays business account & have checked the sort code & account details are correct, and that it's definitely marked as a business (non personal) account.....so far there's nothing appeared in my FreeAgent dashboard but know it's being rolled out in stages, just wondered if I can tell if I've done something wrong or I just haven't had it rolled out to my FreeAgent account yet......
roan, Wed April 04, 2012
Hi Kat,

We're ramping out roll out this week, and we anticipate most people will be live with the feeds by next week.

We'll send out a email once it's been activated for you, so wait for that to come through.
Phil Clayton, Thu April 05, 2012
You had me sold anyway, but this is tops it.

Thank you for the confidence in cloud based accounting. We experience very often that people are reluctant to move the books to the cloud. And the security issues? Well, I think that the threat of pouring hot coffee over the office/home computer is still bigger than attacks on or failure of data mirrored several times on different physical locationsI work for E-conomic Ltd., we have never been an install package software but we sure see how internet access to the clients books is a DREAM for accountants. It redefines accounting both for accountants but most significantly for small businesses.

HSBC gets another vote over here!
David Marston, Tue April 17, 2012
Just noticed the daily feed option is now there for one of my clients. Unfortunately, he is with Barclays Wealth, not your common or garden Barclays, and Barclays Wealth have a website from the dark ages so I doubt if it will work!
James Cocker, Wed April 25, 2012
Can you confirm if NatWest/RBS already provide the services required for you to be able to implement automated feeds for it's accounts? Or will we have to wait for NatWest to offer this service before you can add it to FreeAgent?

Any idea when there might be a Santander feed?
