Bank Feeds have arrived

Posted on 06 February 2013 by Comments (58)

Managing your books just got a whole lot easier with the automatic import of bank transactions into your FreeAgent account.

Sometime back in the late Cretaceous period we announced that development had started on Bank Feeds. Since then, tectonic plates have shifted, civilisations have risen and fallen, and all the while, work has continued inexorably on Bank Feeds.

The year is now 2013 and the great news is the coming of Bank Feeds is now upon us. But is it such a big deal?

Yes, this is a big deal!!!*

Bank Feeds automate the process of importing bank transactions from your bank into FreeAgent. Instead of downloading and uploading electronic statements, just connect FreeAgent to your online bank account and we'll automatically import your transactions every day. It's a truly massive time saver, and one that removes a huge source of friction when managing your accounts.

We've actually had a link with Barclays Bank for some time, and the feedback we've had from people using this has been amazing.

To enable a wider wave of bank feeds we’ve partnered with Yodlee, one of the leading global providers of online banking solutions, who enable us to provide feeds for many different banks at a stroke.

Getting started

Enable Bank Feeds

From your Bank Account page just click the Enable Bank Feed button.

When you set up a new feed you will need to enter your online banking login details. FreeAgent doesn’t store these but Yodlee will securely store them in order to regularly import your transactions. It's important to note that this is all Yodlee are able to do with the credentials - there's no access to any other online banking functions.

Pending Bank Feeds

Depending on the bank you might be asked some security questions (like your cat's maiden name), and that's pretty much it. The setup procedure can take a while - up to 5 minutes - so there's time to watch the finale of Dirty Dancing again. Treat yourself.

Once that's done, you'll be notified that the feed has been enabled and you should start seeing transactions, going forward from today, imported into your account within 48 hours. You'll see a notification of the current status of the Bank Feed in the right hand column.

Which Banks are supported?

For the initial release we’ll be supporting about 40 UK and US banks:

UK Banks US Banks
  • Bank of Ireland - 365 online
  • Bank of Scotland
  • First Direct
  • First Trust Bank
  • ICICI Bank - Business
  • ING DIRECT Bank
  • Lloyds TSB Offshore International
  • NatWest Bank
  • NatWest Business Bankline
  • Post Office - Savings
  • Royal Bank of Scotland - Business Bankline
  • Royal Bank of Scotland - Business Digital
  • Royal Bank of Scotland
  • Standard Life
  • The Woolwich
  • Ulster Bank - Business
  • Ulster Bank
  • Bank of America - Bank
  • Bank of America - HRA & FSA
  • Burke & Herbert Bank and Trust
  • Burke & Herbert Cash Management Account
  • Chase Bank
  • Citizens Union Bank
  • First Trade Union Bank
  • HSBC Bank USA
  • ING DIRECT Bank
  • JP Morgan Private Bank
  • Regions - Cash Management
  • SunTrust Bank
  • The Union Bank Company
  • Union Bank (Vermont)
  • Union Bank and Trust (MN)
  • Wells Fargo (Commercial Electronic Office)

More will be added over time so if yours isn't listed then don't panic.

And now the bad news - if your online bank uses one of those password gizmos (called multi-factor authentication in the trade) then we won't be supporting these for the time being. This includes HSBC, but we're working on this.

Any questions?

Of course you do - that's only healthy, which is why we've put together a bunch of Knowledge Base articles describing how to set up Bank Feeds, and details about what is actually happening behind the scenes.

Take a good look through before you set up your feed.

Is this thing turned on?

If you can't see the option to enable Bank Feeds then don't worry. We'll be rolling this out gradually over the next few weeks, just to make sure everything is humming along nicely. So if you can’t see it today then it will be coming soon, as we add more people and new feeds.

Until next time, Roan and the team at FreeAgent

* And I’ll use exclamation marks with reckless abandon to prove it.

Over to you...

Automated bank feeds?

I think I may just start weeping tears of joy!

Please add Santander oh FreeAgent overlords!

Amen
David Miller, Wed February 06, 2013
I've been waiting for this functionality for a long time (and it is indeed a big deal), but I have to admit to being a little disappointed by your choice to use Yodlee. I just don't feel comfortable providing my online banking login details to a 3rd party company, however long-established they are and however much they claim to keep them safe.

Similar thoughts from somebody else here:
http://www.accountingweb.co.uk/group-thread/bank-feeds-you-know-theyre-dodgy-right

Is there any chance of getting more official/direct feeds (as I believe the Barclays one is) in FreeAgent in the future?
Jim Cooper, Wed February 06, 2013
Great news from FreeAgent until I saw that Santander haven't been included yet.

Can you give an estimate as to when they might be linked with?
Nic Wise, Wed February 06, 2013
AWESOME news (well, for everyone else.... **HSBC grump**)

Really happy about this, because I added showing the balances, and last 30 days of transactions, to the last major version of mobileAgent, so this is going to REALLY useful for mobile users.

Thanks guys!
Ian, Wed February 06, 2013
If someone takes 50k from your bank through no fault of your won the bank will assume liability. If you give your credentials such as log in details to a third party such as yodlee and someone takes 50k from your bank you won't get it back because you have broken your T & C's with your bank.
David, Thu February 07, 2013
Ian, you seem to share my concerns!

FreeAgent do suggest that the cautious amongst us check that our banks are happy for us to give our login details to Yodlee, but I suspect the answer will be "absolutely not, that's against your T&Cs" in many cases.

FreeAgent, I would love to hear whether you have any plans to extend your direct bank feeds beyond Barclays?

Luckily (in some ways), my bank isn't currently supported by Yodlee anyway - so I don't yet need to decide between security and convenience!
roan, Thu February 07, 2013
David: We're definitely working towards more direct feeds with banks, and in the future this is the way things will go I'm sure. At the minute however, using a solution like Yodlee is the only way to provide a wide coverage of bank feeds.

I actually saw this yesterday which was really interesting: http://www.openbankproject.com/

Jim: We've no ETA for other bank feeds as yet. We want to see how things go first with the initial feeds, and then expand things from there.
Harry, Thu February 07, 2013
That's great - although I'm in the HSBC crowd. Are we talking a few months wait or a few years?
roan, Thu February 07, 2013
Harry: I really hope it's not a few years!
David, Thu February 07, 2013
Roan, thanks for the answers - much appreciated. I can understand why you've chosen Yodlee for now. http://www.openbankproject.com/ does indeed look very interesting, however.
Liam, Thu February 07, 2013
Hey,

Thanks - looking good - can we not add multiple bank feeds? I set up the main account but need to establish another connection is that not possible?

Thanks

Liam
roan, Thu February 07, 2013
Liam: there's no restriction on how many bank feeds you can set up under one account. You should be able to set up as many as you like.
Danny, Thu February 07, 2013
Will you be able to support HSBC (UK) bank? I've been waiting for years for a feature like this for my business.
Nick Miller, Fri February 08, 2013
HSBC isn't there. That's a big big shame. Please can you try your best to get this up and running asap!
Nick, Sat February 09, 2013
Seemed good at first glance, until that is I realised the list of banks supported was pretty small and missed some major banks like HSBC and Santander.
Jon Jenkins, Mon February 11, 2013
For all the HSBC customers the reason for no feed at this stage is (I assume) that it only offers a direct bank feed at an additional charge per month. FA will probably have to hook up to that completely separate to the work carried out on Yodlee. In the meantime is uploading a statement really that time restrictive? The direct bank feed is great but it is not the be all and end all. If you are like most of our clients and do not update your data daily then what is the need for having daily updated bank feeds?
Duncan Michael-MacGregor, Mon February 11, 2013
Santander next please! ;)
Stephan, Mon February 11, 2013
What a great feature. FreeAgent is becoming better and better. I know you're focussed on UK, but some german banks (like "Deutsche Bank") would be really nice... There is no programm like FreeAgent on the market (as far as I can recall) and that would make use even better. So keep going with the bank feed and don't forget Deutsche Bank ;)
Tim M, Tue February 12, 2013
What, no Santander?

That's a real shame :(
Ed, Wed February 13, 2013
Great news. One vote here for prioritising Cooperative Bank, please.
LB, Wed February 13, 2013
Another vote for Coop, a lot of smaller concerns have gone with coop banking, please therefore try an look into this it will reflect your customer base, also can you clarify if you have not already if the using this option does invalidate the T+C's please
John, Wed February 13, 2013
Love it...but when is Santander coming on-stream?
jackie harris, Wed February 13, 2013
Hi
This sounds great but I can't understand why Lloyds allow personal accounts to link, but not business. How ludicrous is that?
Keith the accountant, Thu February 14, 2013
This is great news but how can you get a First Direct feed but not one from HSBC?

After all, First Direct are part of HSBC
Gareth Squire, Mon February 18, 2013
HSBC - a very popular bank for small businesses. Shame.
Christine Tautari, Mon February 18, 2013
Needless to say, HSBC needs to be here. I love FreeAgent but it's pointless ranting about a new service if one of the major business banks is not included in your service. I've been waiting for bank feeds for a while and yes, when you are a busy small business, uploading bank statements etc is just another job to do and the reconciliation side of things. But we wait and hope that you can get this one sorted.
Jack, Tue February 19, 2013
It doesn't want to accept the Natwest details - maybe this is something to do with the aborted Satander sale? The login procedures have changed to access the account so perhaps this is the problem?
Also, how secure is this system? Does it breach ones T&C's with the bank? Eg in the event of hacking and theft, is Bank still responsible? thanks
roan, Tue February 19, 2013
We're still looking into adding new feeds, including certain Co-op and Natwest ones. It's often the case however that certain accounts will work whiles others don't, even for the same bank.

I'll reiterate what I said regarding HSBC and Santander. We know these are important bank feeds to support and we'll be working on it, but you'll have to wait a bit longer unfortunately.

Jack: We've published more details about the security side of bank feeds here http://www.freeagent.com/support/kb/banking/yodlee-faqs-security
Donna, Thu February 21, 2013
Yes please for the Co-operative.

I see you've said that not all accounts with one bank will work. A lot of small businesses will have joined through their FSB membership so I guess the FSB Current Business Account will be one for many.

Certainly I had a heck of trouble getting data into FreeAgent from Co-op and gave up some years ago. To be able to link it to the account would be really, really dreamy!
Dave, Thu February 21, 2013
I was excited when I saw this post, then saw you're using a third party and then saw there is not HSBC UK support.. double whammy :(
Hannah, Fri February 22, 2013
Whilst I'm a Barclays customer, as a sole trader, I have a personal current account - alas I cannot use this feature!
Timm, Sat February 23, 2013
Any chance that we get support for Bulgarian banks, in my case First Investment Bank, sooner or later?
Mike Rouse, Sun February 24, 2013
A killer feature and smoothly integrated. Well done.
Martyn, Mon February 25, 2013
I have loved having Barclays data feeds since they started last year - has saved me no end of time.

If you could get AMEX accounts added, that would be a huge win for me and I'm sure lots of others - but I understand how complex these things must be for your dev gurus! Keep up the great work.
Randy, Mon February 25, 2013
Sounds great, but pleeeeeese don't forget about us Aussies in terms of ramping up ALL the banking and payroll functionality.
roan, Wed February 27, 2013
We're definitely plan to roll out other non-US and UK banks in the near future, so we'll take note of any that are mentioned here.
Kelly, Wed February 27, 2013
Canadian banks please! (we only have 5 main banks).
Tom Hole, Wed March 06, 2013
Other than "soon" does Santander actually have a provisional date (a week, a month, 6 months, a year+?

(I have used Yodlee for personal accounts before and they have handled my Santander accounts just fine?)

I have been looking for a reason to jump ship from Santander to Barclays and if it isn't happening anytime soon I might use it as an excuse to switch accounts?
Linda, Wed March 06, 2013
We are with Santander too so I was also excited until I saw this :-(
Abraham Roig, Wed March 06, 2013
Please CAIXABANK from spain !!!
darren, Wed March 06, 2013
BBVA Compass.... multi-factor authentication... any predictable timeline?
Timm, Wed March 06, 2013
Please add the First Investment Bank (Bulgaria)
Stephen King, Thu March 07, 2013
Please add Triodos! SME banking for good!
roan, Thu March 07, 2013
Banks that use password gizmos, such as Santander and HSBC, won't be supported initially. We're looking into these but we don't have a time frame.

For some of the other banks mentioned here (including non-UK ones) we'll look into these, and let you know how we get on. We have to examine them on a case by case basis.
Luke Watts, Fri March 08, 2013
Another vote here for Co-op, but having seen their antique banking site I'm not sure that they can support it? And also there's the whole multi-factor security.
Lars B, Fri March 08, 2013
It'd be great if you'd get HSBC on board
Bex H, Sat March 09, 2013
St.George Bank, Australia, please.
Ian Crowther, Sat March 09, 2013
Santander Please!!!!
Rem, Mon March 11, 2013
Another vote for Australian banks.
Dave, Mon March 11, 2013
AIB - http://www.aib.ie/personal/home
If you can add also thanks
Sam McFadden, Mon March 11, 2013
Our bank account usses a 'gizzmo'. Would be very interested to see a workaround release for this. Any ideas when you may roll this out?

Kind regards,
Sam
Nick May, Mon March 11, 2013
Great news but when are you linking with Sandanter?
Daniel Smith, Mon March 11, 2013
I have been waiting patiently but I still cannot see the option to link my account. I am a Barclays user so surely this should be working. Where is it?
Michael, Wed March 13, 2013
I have recently been told by FA that any bank such as Lloyds business and HSBC personal which use one of those annoying verification gadgets will not be able to be included in this. if thats true I am inconsolable.

FA: please unbreak my heart and tell me its not true.
Mikkel Breum, Wed March 13, 2013
I want to take the oportunity to ask for German Banks, again. you'll get almost ALL GERMAN BANKS covered by implementing support for just one API:

All german banks (almost) use a protocol for interfacing with their api called HBCI

HBCI is open source.

A range of apps are available for desktops and iOS that use HBCI.

I would love if FreeAgent could also communicate with these banks.

Here are the specs:
http://www.hbci-zka.de/english/specif...

Here is a link to some example apps:

http://www.ioutbank.de/
http://limoia.com/saldomat
http://moneymoney-app.com/

Revisit this thread:

roan, Sat March 16, 2013
Daniel: If you have a Barclays account then we've had bank feeds available for some time. Just enable it from the Bank Account page.

Michael: At the minute we won't support feeds from any banks that use password gadgets, but we are looking into this now.

Mikkel: We'll look into this and see if we're able to support German banks.
Dave, Mon March 18, 2013
+1 for Triodos bank
