According to Apple, their highly-anticipated new iPhone5 was built with precision that you’d expect in a finely-crafted watch. That got us thinking about other examples of fine craftsmanship where businesses go above and beyond for their customers. Here are some of our favourites:
Just how much work goes into an expensive handbag, anyway? Luxury designer Mulberry’s bags are handmade by 190 craftspeople and apprentices in their rural England factory, The Rookery. This video shows the painstaking process of hand-crafting each bag, and there’s more background about The Rookery on their site.

This Atlantic article details how everything from traffic directions, speed limits and public transport schedules are painstakingly collected and managed by an army of Google operators, working from satellite and Street View data. Now that Apple have replaced Google Maps in iOS 6, will they need to build their own army to compete?

It’s inspiring to see how much passion and expertise each business commits to their craft.

This week, popular webcomic XKCD released what has to be the world’s biggest comic - at 165888 x 79872 pixels, it would fill 4,212 iPad screens and would cover 46 feet if printed out. Inside the comic is an entire illustrated world, filled with stories, hidden treasures and jokes, all painstakingly hand-drawn. The amount of effort to create the comic is already inspiring others, who have already started creating maps and guides to help you explore the hand-crafted world.
