Online invoice payments with GoCardless

We’ve been working away on something exciting here at FreeAgent Towers, which we hope is going to be a big hit with all of our customers who have trouble chasing their payments.

GoCardless logoWe’ll have more details in the coming days, but the headline news is that online invoice payments are coming to FreeAgent. We’ve been working closely with the guys at GoCardless to develop some new functionality that will provide our users with a significantly cheaper and much less stressful way of getting paid online by their clients.

If you haven’t heard of GoCardless, it’s a brilliant UK company with big ideas that’s pioneering a new direction in the online payment space. Essentially, it allows people who run small businesses to get paid directly from their customers’ bank accounts - without the need to set up a specific merchant account to handle the transaction or pay any credit card fees. Check their website out: it’s pretty awesome stuff and can save time, money and effort in one seamless process.

We're really excited about how smooth online payments are going to be in FreeAgent. When we say we've been "working closely" with GoCardless we're not exaggerating: we even had their co-founder, Tom, embedded at our HQ to oversee our integration. The fact that he was willing to brave the dreich Scottish summer should prove just how dedicated everyone has been to making online payments in FreeAgent a reality!

Of course, we know that one of the biggest pains for small businesses is chasing payments from customers - and that one of the most requested features we’ve had from our users is for the ability to set up online payments directly through FreeAgent. So we hope everyone is going to be very happy with the results of our work with GoCardless when it’s complete.

The finishing touches are just being put on this now, and we hoping to have everything up and running in the next few days. Initially this will just support one-off payments but we’re looking to add support for pre-authorisation of future payments soon - it’ll be worth the wait.

Over to you...

AWESOME stuff guys, this is a brilliant news. I know the guys from GoCardless and it's an awesome partnership you've just made.

Well done on both of you :)

I'm not sure about this... So those customers are going to have to set up a DD with GoCardless in order to pay an invoice? Can't see many wanting to do this... Especially those that are late payers.

Hi James,

The mechanism is Direct Debit but this is usually authorised for one-off payments only. It won't allow other payments to be taken without the client's consent.

The whole set up process is incredibly fast too. You can be up and running in a few minutes.

This would be simply awesome, having some major headaches and fees getting payments from the USA.

This is good news indeed!

It's strange! This morning I was thinking how cool it'd be if FreeAgent did this and about an hour later I saw your tweet!

Looking forward to giving it a go!

:-)

Will I be able to accept payments from Australia with this?
Ben Holland, Wed August 01, 2012
Wow, really great new. Just started using the service and it's great. Loving it even more now!!
Dan Mason, Wed August 01, 2012
Can you set this up with recurring invoices if you want the client to pay monthly fees for example? And the money collected by Direct Debit automatically?
Caroline Gurney, Wed August 01, 2012
Fantastic news for getting payments from my overseas clients. Can't wait for it to go live.
roan, Wed August 01, 2012
@Dan Mason: The first release of our payment portal will just support one-off payments, but you can use this with recurring invoices.

GoCardless does support pre-authorisation of payments so you can bill up to a max limit, previously agreed with your client, per month. We won't be supporting that initially, but it is something we'll work on soon.

This is a great facility from a very interesting company. By-passing the need for a merchant account is fantastic and will save business owners a lot of money through reduced handling fees.

Very good news. One-off payments are fine, but the ability to just set a client up so that all invoices up to a certain amount we issue are just paid automatically is the real thing that would make a difference.

One-off payments via a web link would still end up in the usual calling up clients to hassle them for payment. With pre-auth, you just get them to sign up once, and the rest is automatic unless they cancel. I don't see any issue with this - the Direct Debit guarantee means that any billing errors are guaranteed to be refunded anyway.

I hope the pre-auth integration follows very quickly after the one-off!

I love the idea of allowing clients an easy way to pay online, it should help me wean off the few clients that still insist on paying by cheque because they don't do online banking.

However, the one thing that puts me off GoCardless, is the fact that it takes a week for the money to reach me!

When the majority of my clients currently pay by bank transfer which reaches my account the same day, having to wait a whole week is quite a step backwards for me.

Great idea - but you'd expect that from Freeagent

Used this yesterday and it was so simple, used it again today, at last, a simple way for my customers to pay for their products without lining the pockets of some other payment gateways. Thanks Freeagent!
