Taking Online Accounting to the Mainstream

Today marks a huge milestone in the life of FreeAgent Central, and in the future of small business accounting we think: we're announcing a strategic partnership with IRIS Software.

If you're not an accountant you may not have heard of IRIS, but as well as supplying software to over 60,000 business customers in the UK, they currently dominate the accountancy practice software market with over 14,000 practice customers (a 50% market share).

IRIS will have exclusive rights to resell FreeAgent under their own brand to the UK accountancy practice market, while we will continue to offer FreeAgent to all our other UK and worldwide customers (our existing FreeAgent-friendly practices will have the choice of staying with us or moving across to IRIS). We'll announce exactly how that will work in the coming weeks.

IRIS will also be making an investment in the company in return for a minority stake, and alongside this we'll be accepting further investment from new and existing shareholders like Robin Klein of The Accelerator Group and Christoph Janz. Robin is a key figure in the UK technology scene, backing other startup ventures including Moo, LoveFilm and Graze, and he, Christoph and our other investors have already been an invaluable source of expertise and advice.

Phill Robinson, IRIS’s Accounting Practice Solutions’ Managing Director, will be joining our board of directors. Previously, Phill was the Chief Marketing Officer and Chief Operating Officer (Sales and Distribution) at Salesforce.com. There are few people on the planet with as impressive a track record of success in the software-as-a-service arena, and he brings a wealth of experience which will really help us as we dramatically accelerate our growth.

All of this is a great validation for the team's hard work these last three years, and a massive boost for our vision to democratize accounting and bring simple, understandable tools to small businesses everywhere.

In truth, of course, it's our burgeoning community of passionate users who make it all possible, and all worthwhile. Thanks to each and every one of you for your custom and your kind words.

So what does this mean for you guys? Well, one upshot of the investment is that we'll be able to aggressively accelerate our development (we're hiring!) and tackle some of the bigger features, like automatic bank data synchronisation, as well as maintain our constant efforts to simplify and streamline and polish every part of FreeAgent until it sparkles.

We spend more time each day than is strictly healthy thinking about accounting software. But it means that we have some really big ideas which will take FreeAgent to the next level - and which now includes ideas for amazing tools for accountants as well. We're just so excited about it all, and of course we'll keep you posted right here as we turn these ideas into reality.

So stay tuned.

Ed

Over to you...

Hardly goes without saying - delighted for you guys - well done: http://www.accmanpro.com/2010/03/29/freeagent-takes-investment-from-iris/

Wowza! Nice one guys. That's huge news! Bring on automatic account aggregation!!! :D
Ross Dargan, Tue March 30, 2010
Automatic account aggregation FTW ;)
Andy Stewart, Tue March 30, 2010
Lucky IRIS!

Good stuff guys. You're on a roll.
Sally Fletcher at BFCA, Tue March 30, 2010
Congratulations to each and every one of you!

We're passionate about FreeAgent, as you know, and look forward to a continued working relationship with you.

Keep up the great work.

Interesting move for IRIS too. (although as an ex-employee of Solution6/MYOB, I'd dispute the "dominate" bit!)

Well done, gents - a major thing for you I'd guess, and it opens a HUGE potential market of future 'FreeAgent Friendly' firms.

I assume this mean that FAC will export nicely to IRIS accounts-prep in the near future.

FAC remains a niche product (something you've rightly always seen as a strength rather than a weakness) so IRIS will need to offer something for FAC customers who outgrow the product (Stock Control, etc).

It's OK, I'm not expecting answers to the above - just thinking aloud!

Well done Ed and all at FreeAgent. Looking forward to seeing the software benefits of integration with IRIS

...and well done for avoiding Sage!
Phil Richards, Tue March 30, 2010
Congratulations to both you and Iris, with best wished to both of you.
Iris's investment in you shows the value you have to offer to Accountancy practices and their clients, and I look forward to seeing the new developments.

Congratulations Ed and all at FreeAgent.

This is great news indeed. Perhaps bigger news for IRIS as FreeAgent is so much better :)
Chris Bridgen, Tue March 30, 2010
Very well done chaps, wishing you all the best & looking forward to seeing where this takes the product in the future. Exciting times.

Regards,

Chris

Four Magic Words: "automatic bank data synchronisation"

I love Freeagent, always have. Big congrats!

Now, when are you guys turning your attention to the HOME accounting scene?? My wife would kill for Freeagent-like tools for our home accounts! Now Microsoft Money is gone, the market is wide open.

Oh, and that automatic account download thing too... :)
Polly Purvis, Wed May 05, 2010
great news guys - glad to hear the 'empire' is expanding
David Vachell, Fri July 23, 2010
This sounds like great news... but... the thing that I really like about FAC is the simplicity for us lay folks. It really takes the burden out of the stuff that accountants get paid for - so please, please keep it simple. Every accountant will have lots of good ideas about how to improve the package - and it will if you are an accountant, but if you make it into the sort of package that I have switched over from (QB), then I will be off again.

Good news. But will this have any cost implications for your existing customers?
roan, Sun August 01, 2010
Rachel: This won't have any cost implications for existing customers
