Making Tax Digital: taking our next steps with HMRC’s public pilot

I’m delighted to let you know that we’ve taken our next major step in our mission to help small business owners navigate the UK’s forthcoming Making Tax Digital (MTD) legislation.

FreeAgent is already one of the suppliers on HMRC’s list of software ready to support MTD for VAT and now we’re also among the first handful of providers taking part in HMRC’s public pilot for MTD for VAT.

The new legislation will require VAT-registered businesses with a turnover of £85,000 or more to keep digital tax records and make submissions to HMRC using software from next April.

We’ve been working closely with HMRC to ensure we provide the best possible experience for customers who will be submitting VAT returns under MTD once the legislation comes into effect. If you're a FreeAgent customer, you’ll get a notification in our software to let you know the best time to sign up to HMRC's public pilot. Credit card bank feeds are live

We’re excited to announce the launch of credit card bank feeds today, saving you even more time getting your accounts in order.

Powered by Yodlee, hundreds of new credit card feeds are now available, including all the major providers such as American Express, Barclaycard, Halifax and many more.

You enable credit card feeds just like any other bank feed. Select the Enable Bank Feed button when viewing your credit card account in FreeAgent and go through the setup process to enable the feed. Once in place, the feed will automatically import your credit card transactions into FreeAgent each day.

The redesign is live!

A preview of the new FreeAgent design!

A couple of weeks ago we announced that a user interface redesign was coming soon to FreeAgent. The day has now arrived and if you log in to your account, you’ll see the shiny new header and footer.

As we mentioned a couple of weeks ago, the aim of this redesign wasn’t to radically change the way FreeAgent works - it was more about streamlining and polishing two key parts of the interface: the header and footer.

From the top

The header and navigation area have been trimmed down. The navigation organisation is the same, but it now works better across different devices and screen sizes, and its accessibility has been improved to help people using assistive technology.

The footer has also slimmed down and we’ve introduced a new Help widget. Powered by Ruby the Robot, the Help widget can access the entire FreeAgent Knowledge Base in an instant. Just ask it any question and Ruby will try to bring back the answers you seek.

What’s next?

What you see today is only the first major step in an ongoing programme of changes to the FreeAgent UI. We’re taking the approach of releasing this in small increments to minimise disruption and launch changes quickly, so stay tuned for more details on what’s coming next. We’ll be blogging openly and recruiting beta testers for early access to more changes.

I just wanted to say a huge thanks to everyone who has taken part in the beta testing so far. Your feedback and help has been invaluable in helping us refine the new UI.

A preview of the new FreeAgent design!

Over the past couple of months we’ve been running a beta test with over 300 FreeAgent customers, trying out a redesigned user interface and iterating based on their feedback. We’re now getting ready to launch the redesign to all of our customers, so here’s the lowdown.

We know product redesigns can be a big deal (and not always in a good way) so we wanted to tell you exactly what’s changing and when.

Why have you done this?

It’s been over six years since we last launched a major update to the FreeAgent UI, so it’s been a while coming. Beyond just keeping up with the cutting edge of internet fashion, we have a few important goals for this work, including streamlining page layout and performance, better consistency across mobile and desktop and improving accessibility.

What’s changing?

Nothing will change in terms of workflows or even organisation within the app, but the main header area and footer have been streamlined and rebuilt from the ground up.

The bright and bold new header is built to be responsive across devices and the reduced height brings a focus to key content. We've bumped up the size of the header icons and have taken the opportunity to redraw them to add our own dash of personality.

The navigation is structured the same as before but has been rebuilt with a key focus on accessibility concerns from the very start.

The footer has been reimagined to deliver a streamlined slim footer that matches the updated header. Key links to terms and our Knowledge Base remain, and we've found space for a brand new support feature.

Easier access to support

As part of this redesign we’re also introducing a new support feature - Ruby the Robot! Clicking on the new blue ‘Help’ button at the bottom of your FreeAgent account will pop up a window that lets you ask Ruby questions and get immediate answers from our vast Knowledge Base of help articles.

When will it go live?

We’re now almost ready to launch the new design, and you should see this arrive in your account on Wednesday 26th September. We’ll send out an email on the day, just in case you haven’t stuck a Post-it® on the fridge!
