Many freelancers and small business owners work from home because it’s convenient and cost effective, but there are plenty of other reasons why working from home can be awesome! Whether you’re home-based at the moment, or thinking about working from home in the future, here are four reasons why it could work for you.
How long do you currently spend every day travelling to your workplace? 30 minutes? An hour? Even longer? That’s time that could potentially be stressing you out and affecting your health. When you work from home, however, there’s no daily commute - which means you get to sleep for longer if you want to, and avoid the hassle of a long drive or jam-packed train journey every morning.
Some argue that working from home means there are more distractions to deal with and, as a result, you could be less productive. But researchers have suggested that the opposite may be true. A nine-month study of call centre workers for travel company Ctrip revealed that remote staff made 13.5% more calls than their office-based counterparts. Remote workers were also half as likely to quit and said they felt happier on the job. So if you’re after job satisfaction, maybe it’s time to ditch the suit and tie for some comfy sweatpants and a T-shirt?
In an office, it’s unlikely that you’ll ever be in complete control of your working environment. There’ll always be someone demanding for the thermostat to be cranked up or down, or colleagues whose clutter inexplicably spreads onto your desktop. At home, however, you’re in absolute control of where and how you decide to work. Want to lie on the couch with a laptop? No problem! Need to blast out Rage Against the Machine at full volume to get your creative juices flowing? Go ahead! Working from home enables you to make all of the little changes you need to find your ambient comfort level, which can increase your productivity.
