Welcome to the Depot

We're very excited to announce the launch of a new project today, and one we hope will be appreciated by many of our customers.

So, welcome to the Depot: a furtive glance into the secretive and sometimes musky world of FreeAgent development.

We're often asked for more clarity on what's currently going on behind the scenes. Get Satisfaction is great for hearing feedback and requests but it doesn't provide outwards visibility on current and upcoming dev priorities.  The Depot should help with that, with the added twist of letting you get involved as well.

FreeAgent Depot

So it's a Product Roadmap right?

Well yeah but, no but...It's a snapshot of what currently in development, and some of the stuff we're considering for the future, but the Depot is intentionally not a fixed and comprehensive list of all current or forthcoming features.

Why not? Well, we're still of the opinion that a definitive, public roadmap would do more harm than good in setting up expectations about what is to be delivered and when. You may or may not agree with that, but we're making that call.

We're constantly re-evaluating our development priorities based on user feedback,  so it just wouldn't make sense for us to set things in stone with a public roadmap. I do believe there's a happy medium between public roadmap and complete radio silence and hopefully it's the Depot.

So how do I have my say?

Simple really, you'll see 3 different statuses on the items on the Depot board: Delivered, En Route and At the Depot.

Items that are marked At the Depot are sitting in our development backlog; work hasn't started on them yet, but they're near the top of our list. If you've got a bee in your bonnet about a particular feature you can let us know by hammering the I WANT IT button with impatient fury.

Nice, but I want to see the votes

I can totally understand that, but it's not how it works. Your votes will allow us to gauge interest in particular bits of functionality, but it's not the only factor in deciding our development priority, so we don't want to set an expectation that the features with the most votes will automatically jump to the top of our list.

Again, you may disagree with that, but it's how we want to play it. I can promise you we'll be keeping a very close eye on what you're voting on though.

On a lighter note

We also hope you have fun using the Depot, as we wanted to create something that expressed the personality of the company. Yeah, we're making accounting software, but if you've ever met any of us, you'll hopefully agree that we're a pretty laid back and friendly bunch, and we wanted the Depot to reflect that.

Robbie, our interface designer, has done an amazing job bringing the functionality and playful design together into something we hope will become a great meeting place for the company and our customers.

I'm sure people will have some strong opinions about the Depot, and we can't wait to hear them.

Head on over to the Depot.

Over to you...

Such a lovely design! It's nice to see what we might get soon, great to see some features I can really make use of :)

Interesting - I'll have a look.

Out of curiousity - Is the world of FreeAgent development really 'musky' or just 'murky'? ;-)

@Charles: A bit of both to be honest :)

I love the design, and the idea.

Personally, I vote(d) for API 2.0, but I'm kinda biased having written mobileagent :) (http://www.fastchicken.co.nz/mobileagent )

How do items appear on the list. Is there a "pre-list"? If so, how does a request appear on it?

And finally, please may we have "Journal entries for accountants" not to be confused with "Journal Entries for Dummies"!
Liam O'Leary, Mon November 01, 2010
Are you going to put the FA van into production? Looking forward to the INVOICE-LEVEL PURCHASE ORDER NUMBERS !
roan, Mon November 01, 2010
@Stuart: We have several lists, from a free-for-all collection bucket of users requests down to a definitive backlog of prioritised development work.

The Depot is a partial look at the hi-fidelity end of the spectrum. Stuff we're either working on right now, or is near the top of our to-do list. Make sense?

The best place to make feature requests (like journal entries) is still Get Satisfaction.

Lovely design and nice way of seeing what may be coming.

Appreciate the transparency :-)

Cheers,

Jon

Very nice idea and very pretty too but.... It renders like an absolute dog on an iPhone! Sorry to Robbie who has obviously worked hard but it really is horribly slow even over wifi.

Great to see this! Helps keep us in the loop. Really nice design too...

I really appreciate this view into what's coming up. I find myself frequently frustrated with desired features identified in GetSatisfaction that were marked "we're working on it" only to see that comment was made 2-3 years ago. This Depot shoule allow us to know what's really in progress.

The design's fun and fresh too :-)

Thanks

@David: We've made some updates to the Depot so it should now render much faster (and better) on the iPhone and iPad.

@freeagent does it again! Awesome responsiveness to the improvement of the depot rendering that I moaned about above. Just goes on proving that this is the way SaaS should be.

Thanks guys

Love the design of the depot! Another great idea from you guys, well executed. Really glad you've added this as Get Satisfaction gets frustrating when it is said something is coming and then it's a year or 2 later and there is still no obvious progress. I know exact timescales are always difficult in programming, but at least this gives us some idea.
Very sad that solving the remaining VAT return problems aren't on the list, ie:
i) Ability to deal with outside scope of vat for outgoings [ie an n/a vat option] eg Bank overdraft interest and government fees;
ii) dealing with the reverse charges for non-uk services eg Skype, Efax etc
I know I keep nagging for this but it really is a time eater every 3months, and it's annoying not to actually be able to submit the return via Freeagent when you've gone to all the effort of including the feature. When Freeagent is so great at doing the miles it's frustrating that it's not quite going the last few inches!!
Olly Balmer, Fri December 31, 2010
Excellent Idea and a fun way to present your future plans.

One way to move this from a excellent idea to a really great and usable website would be to provide a short description of each feature (eg roll-over, link, etc) and possibly links to the Get Satisfaction discussion threads originally requesting the feature.

Thanks once again Guys, and for proving that your Best SME Accounting Software Award was well earned!

I would love to see cross-currency rebilling on the list.

I would like to see P11Ds generated from the expenses section of Ltd company FreeAgent
